Apple today launched the first iOS 14.5 developer beta by introducing some improvements. One of the most beneficial to users is the function of unlocking the iPhone by Face ID by wearing a face mask.
However, this function can only be used if the iPhone user is also wearing an Apple Watch. As long as the Apple Watch has also been unlocked. Users just need to look directly at the iPhone as usual to continue using it.
We understand this function needs to be turned on manually first. This aims to allow Face ID to continue the unlocking process with further identity verification on a nearby Apple Watch.
Unlocking Face ID with this face mask is however limited for the purpose of unlocking the iPhone only. Other functions such as verifying App Store purchases still need to be unlocked by fully recognizing the face by Face ID.
Apart from the upgrade to Face ID, iOS 14.5 also brings support for Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5 controllers to iPhone and iPad. Not to forget, this update brings compatibility with the Fitness+ exercise app.
Most important in this update is the implementation of App Tracking Transparency compliance. This will require the app developer to request user approval before collecting user identification for advertisers.
