MediaTek’s rivalry over Qualcomm’s dominance is heating up when it announces its new 5G -capable flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9000.

It is specifically designed for use on flagship Android mobile devices, something that MediaTek has rarely done over the years.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is the first chipset built through a 4nm manufacturing process from TSMC based on the new ARM architecture, v9. The chipset contains one 3.05Ghz Cortex-X2 core, three 2.85GHz Cortex-A710 cores, four 1.8GHz Cortex-A510 high-efficiency cores, and 10 Mali-G710 GPU cores.

In terms of artificial intelligence processing power, this chipset features six cores of its new fifth-generation APU. It is claimed to offer four times the performance and energy efficiency improvements compared to previous products.

Better image processing power

The MediaTek chipset also contains the 18-bit Imagiq Gen 7, the world’s first image signaling processor (ISP) that supports image capture of up to 320MP and data transfer rates of up to 9 gigapixels per second.

As for its video capabilities, the encoder on it is capable of recording video with a resolution of up to 8K at 30fps. It also supports simultaneous 4K video recording on three different cameras. As well as providing Super Night mode for capturing images in low lighting conditions.

Dimensity 9000 also provides 5G modem connectivity support via 3GPP, 3CC (supports download link speeds up to 7Gbps), and MediaTek PowerSave to improve battery usage efficiency.

Although it is built based on MediaTek’s first mmWave modem, this chipset only supports sub-6GHz 5G connectivity for now. In addition, this chip is also claimed to be the first chipset to support Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E.

For now, MediaTek has not stated what smart devices will be equipped with this Dimensity 9000 chipset. Expectedly, this chipset is capable of challenging Qualcomm’s dominance in the flagship device arena.
