Worldwide smartphone sales fell 13.3% in the first quarter of 2020. Sales in February alone dropped to 38% with only 60 million units sold.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also made a significant impact on the already weak smartphone market. To address this, Samsung is reportedly launching a number of affordable 5G smartphone models throughout the year.

Samsung is currently introducing two affordable 5G smartphone models, the Galaxy A51 5G and the Galaxy A71 5G in the US market. However, both Samsung 5G smartphones have yet to be sold and are expected to go on sale around this summer. To date, the Galaxy A71 5G has already begun for sale in China.

The Galaxy A51 5G will sell for $ 499.99 (~ RM2,194), while the Galaxy A71 5G will sell for $599.99 (~ RM2,621) in the U.S. In South Korea, both will sell for 500,000 Won (~ RM1,716) and 700,000 Won (~ RM2,512). While in China, the Galaxy A71 5G is sold for 3,999 Yuan ($ 2,097).

Looking at the price of its first-generation 5G smartphones, we can see Samsung has reduced prices by 62% in the last 11 months. Samsung’s first 5G smartphone, the Galaxy S10 5G, was initially launched for $ 1299.99 (~ RM5,680).

Samsung is expected to launch these models and other 5G smartphones in 5G ready-to-use countries. In addition, Samsung will also continue to launch the latest Galaxy A and Galaxy M models in all market segments to overcome the slowdown in sales.
